In Chinese, 叩頭 (pinyin koutou, popularly kowtow) literally means, knock head, or ask with the head. It is the derivative of this, 三跪九叩 (sangui jiukou). Meaning “three steps and nine knocks”, this is performed in the imperial days only in front of the Emperor.
