English news)

它回答了一个问题,李俊杰问:他们为什么不检查其他国家的护照?(Why they don’t inspect passports of other countries?)

这是她在为马燕红记者会上说:“When the Chinese tourists, especially a single lady, come to Malaysia, they’ll be regarded as … prostitutes…. I know we have a serious problem (prostitution by Chinese) here…. But the police cannot regard everyone who comes from this country (China) as prostitutes.” (I know we have a serious problem – i.e. prostitution by Chinese)。 (Not all Chinese are prostitutes but prostitutes are Chinese.)

(“The Chinese are scared shit. They do not dare get involved in anything perceived as anti-government. They will manufacture porn. They will act as pimps and run brothels. They will traffic in drugs. … They will run illegal lotteries and gambling operations. They will run loan sharking businesses and burn your house down and kidnap your children if you do not pay. They will rob banks and goldsmith shops. This, they dare do. But they will never manufacture anti-government VCDs. And they will never, ever host Malaysia Today on their servers.”)

她非常性!”(I’m more interested in the girl. She is hot!)

Ridhuan Tee repeatedly throws himself up like a duck in a shooting gallery, and his ideas are so inane that he is always an easy one to take out. The menace doesn’t come from him but that which he represents.

———————————

At the third stop after Ampang Park, the Kelana Jaya LRT line heading east arrives at the Jelatek station sandwiched between Setiawangsa and Dato Keramat. This is Malay territory and, as Ridhuan Tee would have it, “our own land.” Hence, when Ridhuan Tee was at work finishing his ulama pseudo psycho-babble that Muslims (including he) have more rights than everybody else, a woman, perhaps still a girl, probably unwed, and almost certainly a Muslim delivered a child in secret and deep in Malay territory.

The next day, a Sunday, Dec 27, Setapak police was told the newborn, still attached to the umbilical cord, was found wrapped inside a plastic bag on a Jelatek train platform. If Malay and if Muslim, and if found out, the consequences for the mother would be severe; it would be criminal by the mere fact of an infant, a girl, coming into being on a Christmas Day or the day after. Tragedy is the other name for Irony.

In the Muslim religiosity of Ridhuan Tee that he extols as virtuous, love requires formal sanction without which it is always dangerous. Coitus even more so and a child, even, or especially, from such a love, has the immanence of punishment to come. Kafka right again. If could be 10,000 ringgit fine, 100 lashes, 1,000 days in the slammer, or stoning, or all the above. Lashing for a few beers would be nothing. She, the mother, must have known it, that is, the consequences; otherwise, why the secrecy?

Imagine, therefore, her months in hiding, hounded by fear, secret delivery, unattended by a doctor, alone in the depths of her despair while Ridhuan Tee pontificates over the irreligious Chinese for tolerating a child of Zhao Mingfu, father killed on the eve of marriage under the watch of government officials while unwed mother was still at the first trimester. Ridhuan Tee, if you remember, called the foetus a “bastard” child. Hence, in Ridhuan Tee’s religious morality into which he has migrated and now champions as supreme, as Ketuanan, is this formula: better discarded dead than to be illegitimate. This is why he has just let published this idiot piece that must seem profound to him: “Accused as criminals better than being evil.” Regardless. To Ridhuan Tee, therefore, dead infant in plastic bag is mere criminality manifested whereas illegitimacy is worse, is evil.

If the young woman aborting the baby had any say in such matters she could, by merely flipping the man’s convoluted logic and tortured language, tell Ah Tee off: “Accused as evil better than being criminal”.

George Orwell never seemed the sort to like the religious types and he particularly took exception to Gandhi, who, on three occasions, would rather permit his wife and a child to die than administer the animal food prescribed by the doctor. In the essay Reflections on Gandhi he wrote:

The essence of being human is that one does not seek perfection, that one is sometimes willing to commit sins for the sake of loyalty, that one does not push asceticism to the point where it makes friendly intercourse impossible, and that one is prepared in the end to be defeated and broken up by life, which is the inevitable price of fastening one’s love upon other human individuals. No doubt alcohol, tobacco, and so forth, are things that a saint must avoid, but sainthood is also a thing that human beings must avoid.

Although a Chinese, Ridhuan Tee has made it clear he hates Chinese and to demonstrate this hatred he flaunts his religion, his Mohamedan name, and he provokes them by suggesting their culture is inferior, their morality a fake: fits perfectly the notion of Ketuanan. Conversely, therefore, he is a saint. It cannot be Islamic sainthood that he aspires but what he can do with its status. Because, if it were sainthood he is after, he would not be an ustaz or ulama or whatever it is they call a “religious scholar”. In religious scholarship, arguments are not reasoned in how then could there be reasoned out? And how could Ridhuan Tee be reasoned with if his only primary source of knowledge – he would call “revelations” – rests purely on one book (which shall be unnamed). And that’s that, the only book he ever turns to all his miserable life.

This is why his arguments read as if full of pontificating bellyaches (reminds of Mahathir Mohamad) and so Art Harun has no trouble demolishing Ridhuan Tee. He is that easy; a first year Stanford student in philosophy could just as well put Ah Tee into a jar. Thus, once ustaz Ah Tee is left to look like an idiotic wreck left behind by Art Harun, the question that lingers like an after taste is, how could that man, pretending sainthood, be so stupid?

And the answer is that he didn’t write for Art Harun, nor Khalid Samad, nor for the purpose of eliciting a discussion from any of them. He wrote it for Utusan readers, people like the mother or the father of the dead Christmas Day infant, reminding – no, sermonizing to – them that your life is not yours, and there are rules to stay alive, to love, to procreate, to work and to eat, and to be on the safe, majority side. The primary rule is, if you are Muslim you are privileged, in possession of, for example, “our land,” he says. Second, if you are not a Muslim, an infidel that is, well then, you could convert, like Ah Tee did. Look at the bright side, he says.

Ah Tee makes repeated references to Muslims and seldom does he mention the word Malay. This may be deliberate, but it is no coincidence either.

He is Umno’s reward and punishment for taking religion out of the individual hearts then positing it into the national political culture so that a man now emerges from among the Chinese – Umno’s declared enemy – who could just as well invoke the name of Islam and say to the Umno Malays: your land is now “our land”. Think of it this way: no Chinese has ever said that before or dare to. Now that he has said so, there’s not a damn thing Umno can do to refute Ah Tee’s claim (or sermons), much less condemn him and shout sedition. To do that Umno spites itself or, worse, refute the Islam that it propagates as synonymous with Malayness, hence Ketuanan. Ah Tee is, after all, Umno’s bastard child, fruit of 50 years of labour bringing Ketuanan into national politics and for acceptance so that all shall bow to its hegemony. Umno (and PAS as well) desire to have more Ah Tees line up behind the keris of Hishamuddin Hussein. Conversion by Ah Tee is existential proof of that acceptance, the ultimate kowtow.

But, the kowtow also goes on at the other side, Malays who otherwise will not bend to Umno. Before when he spoke about Zhao Mingfu’s child and now when Ah Tee speaks of “rights” he has helped to remind the nation that the force of religious morality has the power to give and take life and, therefore, better be regarded from a distance. Found at the Jelatek station, however, could be an addition to the Malay stock, a potential Umno member – Ketuanan, you see – but the life was snuffed out. Such an infant is dead because the ustaz and the ulamas before, and now Ah Tee, has said so to their mothers and fathers: better to be criminal than evil. Tossing out an infant is merely criminal, but your love is worse; it is evil. Now kill the baby! (This is the thing about the ustaz and the Ah Tees: always after people who can’t fight back.)

Khalwat and, by extension, an unwed birth are criminal offenses in Islamic terms, so that under repeated rounds of harangues and tirades what is the mother of the Christmas Day infant to do? Give her up of course because the evil is thus exorcised and it is only criminal if she is discovered. She has to take the chance. Wouldn’t you?

Here, then, is Ah Tee, a Chinaman really, getting under the skin of the Malay society by embracing Umno’s Islam laced with claims of ethnic superiority. He is personification of poetic vengeance to an apartheid policy, for making private the public, for turning religion into a political hammer tool, all of which Umno fails to see beyond the façade, hence folly, of their own making. Incalculable damage springs daily behind Twin Towers and LRT stations, the object demonstrations of Ketuanan. Ah Tee has done what no other Chinese could or dare to do: cut into Malay society and help to rewrite chapters in life and death. Professorship wasn’t enough; they even reward him with a column in the Utusan papers.

There is nothing new to Ah Tee’s mathematical formula that Art Harun, a lawyer who’s so readily impressed, said was “ingenious”. Indeed, how could the ustaz in Ah Tee devise formulae, much less mathematical ones, if all his life is spent contemplating virgins in heaven when life on earth is enough trouble as it is? Science and faith fit as well as squares and circles. Art Harun might as well tell a cow to desist at the sight of a cauliflower and ponder at its beauty. The mere reordering of NEP’s 30:40:30 produces Ah Tee’s 60:40 “formula”, the difference being religion would replace Malay ethnicity as the arbiter.

Umno’s calculations may have aimed for a different goal but to let Ah Tee run wild with his virgin fantasies, the party undermines its own position, taking the middle word out of the United Malays Organisation, without it knowing what’s happening. Or worse, if Ah Tee is to be taken at his word, he is actually rewriting the constitutional Malay definition. Again, no Chinese has ever attempted that. Ironically, Ah Tee is not going to be, certainly not in his generation, a Malay. Just look at him.

Should the Chinese be worried because of, in Art Harun’s words, an “ingenious formula”? The answer: the common Chinese have endured a lot and for a long time, so why should the Ah Tee Formula make any difference now? Bring it on and apply it: one formula, a thousand formulae, for schools, for temples, for houses, for stocks, for babies, and so on. They have been there before, lived and died in all of them. Proof? Zhao Mingfu.

In the early days of the NEP when a shop proprietor in Kuala Kerai, Kelantan, was told that his Malay employee was hardworking, his answer was this: “He has no need to.” Oil was Mahathir Mohamad’s crutch to sow cities and grandeur and towering Malays while he told the Malays to stop relying on crutches. If Umno thinks Ah Tee’s 60:40 formula will retain the Malay vote, go ahead, put it up.

Because few Chinese take Ah Tee seriously, it then says that Art Harun et al are concerned with defeating a shadow, that is, shadow boxing. Rather, they should be concerned for the Jelatek infant stuffed into a grocery bag all because the mother, now wrecked by guilt, is forced to choose between criminality and evil, the kind of false choices that the Ah Tees shovel into young Malay minds. They will then vote Umno, of course, not because Ah Tee is right but because he reminds of Hadi Awang and Nik Aziz more than Najib Razak. One of these days a young woman tossing a grocery bag into an LRT station could well be Ah Tee’s daughter because she went into secret love. Careful Ah Tee with what you wish for. But, go on, do what you do best….
